Abstract
Until the Maastricht Treaty, the European Union had no formal jurisdiction over education. However, education, along with mobility and language learning, has always been seen as one of the levers for the process of European integration. This political vision, which underpinned the launch of the Erasmus programme in the 1980s, also made use of the role of qualification recognition, seen as a tool for ensuring the success of academic mobility and free movement. This article traces the evolution of this process between the 1970s and the 1990s focusing on European Union. The text traces the political motivations that, starting in the 1970s, led in the following decade to the creation and development of the network of National Academic Recognition Information Centres on the initiative of the European Commission.
